About The Cast

In episode 1 provides the story of a child genius, but also shows flaws in her character. Beth, who becomes an orphan when her biological mother Alice Harmon commits suicide, is introduced to the game by the orphanage's custodian, Mr. Shaibel. She quickly shows a great aptitude for chess, and as a teenager, enters the competitive world as a way to earn money.                                             

                                               

 

In episode 2, Beth is adopted by her mother and seeks new adventures in playing in tournaments with prize money. Beth finds herself skipping school and pursuing chess, so her mom and her can afford the bills. Playing chess and traveling to different events, leads Beth Harmon to greater fortune. and to new playing fields.

                                   

 

In episode 3,  opens up with a young Beth and her biological mother. Her mother swims in the lake and heads to a boat and waves at her. They seemed to have a fairly loving relationship. It then moves to Cincinnati, 1963. Beth and her adopted mother have paid for a nice hotel room, ready for the chess tournament. When she registers, they already know she is a champion from Kentucky. “Doubled Pawns” shows how Beth’s popularity has reached far and wide — this chapter shows how she and her mother try and take on the chess world.                                                   

                           

 

In episode 4,  begins with Beth in a Russian language lesson, she’s serious about dominating the world. A man asks her if she’d like to hang out, he recognizes her as the co-champion of the US Open. While at a party, she rings her mother and tells her she is partying with college students and asks her to go to bed. The fourth episode sees Beth coming out of her shell more and slightly struggling with her social life while attempting to dominate the world of chess.                                     

                               

 

In episode 5,  it begins with a flashback of a young Beth, her biological mother tells her that it’s important not to be scared of being alone. In the present day, Beth returns to Kentucky after the traumatic events in Mexico. She’s alone in a house that now belongs to her. Everything is reminding her of Mrs Wheatley.

                           

 

In episode 6,  it opens with a flashback of Beth’s biological mother telling her that there will be smart men out there trying to teach her things but advises her never to forget herself, which fits the theme of the chapter because she ends up doing just that. In the present day, Benny is continuing to train Beth chess moves and Russian while on a road trip to New York.

 

                             

 

In episode 7, the finale begins with young Beth with her biological mother, they head to her father’s new house, and her mother begs him for help, but he tells her to leave. They drive off, and her mother says they have a problem to solve, the problem is Beth. The ending of The Queen's Gambit gives Beth her final demons, whether or not she can overcome them and achieve what she set out to do.
